  • Laboring On

Several of you have been inquiring about the house, so I guess it is time for another update on our remodel! We continue to work on the house, although not as much now that the days are so short and the weather colder. There isn't near as much that the kids and I can do while Jim is at work each day. We really need him here to show us what to do. A lot of the work that has been done in the past month and a half is work that isn't visible at a glance, but is important to complete. For instance, Jim and Seth put an access from inside the house into the attic. He and the boys also did a lot of bracing in the roof, and we had a new gas furnace installed. Personally, I think it is beautiful, but am not including a picture since I wasn't sure that it would interest all of you. We have also been doing a lot of prep work for the new siding and windows. So...progress is happening!

Here are some pictures of the finished roof. This is the back corner of the garage.

View from the back yard. This spring we hope to cover all the paved areas with a porch with railings. This will give us a large area on which to have barbecues with friends and family.

View from the side yard. See our new bedroom window that Jim is putting the finishing touches on? That is the first window to be installed and a happy milestone to come to! Hopefully, by next spring, the area which our window overlooks will be a beautifully landscaped flowerbed complete with fountain.

Another view from the side yard. This one is of Jim's and my bedroom, the boys' room, and our dining room. Can you see all the freshly turned areas of soil? Isaac helped me plant over 200 bulbs in all of the flower beds the day after Thanksgiving. He shovelled, I placed the bulbs, and he covered them up. So really, he did most of the work. Although deciding where to plant them all was difficult! It will be so much fun to see them bloom beginning in early February all the way until next October!

And a close up look at our new bedroom window. I think it is so pretty. Once all the windows and doors are installed, the kids and I will be able to put up the siding while Jim is at work. Then gutters, painting, and porches!

  • What  difference having a pitched roofline makes!  It's lookiing so good.

Vic's mom planted about 150 bulbs one fall. She stuck with reds and yellows It was a blaze of colour come spring.

  • oH WOW!! how neat.

I planted 20 bulbs this fall. Your aim was a little higher than mine. LOL

Let's compare pictures in the spring. Ha ha haaa... (I can't wait to see yours -- how beautiful!)

  • Thank you SO much for your comments!
Yes, I have read Mere Christianity before. It's one of those few (VERY few) books I have read in their entirety (of course, I don't always get very much out of books when I read them, but that is a whole nother story and a whole nother discussion).
But yeah, I've read it before (and was amazed) and I'm currently more than halfway through reading it for the second time (and am being further amazed).

Thanksgiving in The Bahamas... well, many people will have a traditional Thanksgiving meal at some point around Thanksgiving (U.S. date). BUT, it's not a big to-do at all. It's not a public holiday and everything just goes on as any other day would, except for a hour or two (if that) devoted to the tradition of the Thanksgiving meal.
Oh, and the local public school collects foodstuffs as part of "Harvest" celebrations, and redistributes them to the old and/or needy.
Oh, and I'm guessing that the sermon at my church would've had a "thankful" theme on Thanksgiving Sunday.

Did you have a big celebration and/or get-together for Thanksgiving?

  • UGH... I'm so mad at myself. I knew as I was sending all of that long, drawn-out commenting that it was long and unnecessary. But I did it anyway. UGH. I gotta get over these things. These obsessive compulsive things that I've been doing for TOOO long. Ugh... And even if you don't mind the length of the comment, I do. And I mind the amount of trouble I went to in order to "perfect" what should've been a VERY SIMPLE PIECE OF CONVERSATION.

Anyhow, thanks again for your constant kind comments.

  • It (yours) WAS a long comment, and I appreciated all of it

Gee, I figure that I should soon start calling you Mom... A second Mom.

  • That looks like a bunch of fun.  Now, are you adding on or re-doing or both?

  • It's been snowing for over two hours now. But it's that dry teeny flake type snow that takes a long time to show on the ground.  The grass looks like it needs dusting and I can see snow has drifted into the windhield wipers.  This weather hasn't been as bad as last year's November weather, but I have a feeling we're going to see a steadier supply of snow this winter than we're used to.

Lighted Christmas parades are so pretty. We used to take the kids to the one in Mission when they were little.

  • looks like it's really progressing

  • WOW... your house has been reborn!!!

  • she's Christa Lee Scrimsher Wagner

  • I have a second and third chapter complete, I shall post them soon
