Turning a Corner...
After a few setbacks, the Ungersma household is pretty excited. We were able to pour the footing today! Yay!!! We had hoped to do it sooner, but ran into a few minor problems. None of them were costly, just time consuming and labor intensive. First of all, Jim discovered the work of some diligent carpenter ants. The majority of the damage affected an area about 2-1/2 feet by 4 feet, involving the sill plate, studs, and rim joists and some of the sub floor. Also, the entire rim joist along the front of the house (25 feet) needed to be replaced due to what was probably water damage.
Carpenter ants really do amazing work. I mean, if this wasn't such an important board in our house, I would be able to say that their work is quite lovely.
While Jim was laboring away to repair the damage the carpenter ants had done, Jesse, Seth, Titus, and Isaac were all continuing to finish prepping the rest of the house for the next stages of remodeling.
They made sure that the three foot crawl space was good to go!
After several hours, Jim was able to have the pest damage repaired. In this picture you can also see the beginnings of the forms for the foundation.
Meanwhile, a leak was discovered under the house. It was a pretty easy fix, but time consuming nonetheless.
This morning the cement truck and the pump truck both arrived.
Jim got right to work and poured the footing. Hurray!
Then he leveled it all out. In this picture you can also see how very naked our house is looking these days! Tomorrow Jim and the boys will build the forms for the stem wall. So, we have definitely turned a corner. Instead of tearing the house apart, we are now putting it back together! I think it will be more fun from here on out to post pictures as our work comes together. If only the rain will hold off until the roof is on...

Nice pictures honey! It sure is a good feeling to get the footings poured. I'm looking forward to the framing part of the house-putting-together phase. That is alot more fun.
I hope it goes well!!! Easy providence to you!
woohoo!! You're into the home stretch now, hmm?
So, I know you were doing some construction on your house, but I'm not sure I realised the extent thereof.... your roof is off?!
Also, I was trying to find something witty/clever to say about the ants... Really though, I'm sure their industrious behaviour was a real nuissance to you all.
After all the work involved in taking it apart, it's great to see that (are you ready for this?)...
***PUN ALERT!!!***
...it's all finally coming together!
They are about 20 minutes away from our house but they are going to take 4 more days to put completely
I hate ants. Proverbs 6 has always bothered me. ...
Thats true. I've always admired the work carpenter ants and termites do, and yet I don't like them. I wonder if that counts as plundering the Egyptians.
Or maybe everything will be wonderfully rich in calories, but it won't matter in the least.
That's what everyone says but thats cause you aren't the person that he inflicts all his "payback' on! He says that since my dad tormented him its his turn to do it to me!
haha yeah it looks like your house is going to be a lot different when you guys are done with it!
i like... slowly easing into a schedule instead of BANG and you're full fledge into everything. it's kinda stressful
it's amazing how fast summer goes! and it's already getting really cold here. we're near freezing temperature at night. one of these days we're going to wake up with frost on the ground
Thank you for your kind words.
Claire never stops playing the Messiah. But today she put it in because she's working on some selections for voice
Good post Mom!
We haven't gotten that much done have we? But we have gotten ALL of the cement poured. This was a while ago wasn't it? Not that much has happened since. It is fun doing this project though.
